Tracked leaders, switched right to outer after 2f, ridden along well over 3f out, soon outpaced and behind (enq held into running and riding of the gelding which having jumped level was switched wide down the back straight and soon lost ground under tender handling to finish last of eleven, beaten by 33 1/2 lengths. Vet said gelding was slightly lame on its left hind. Jockey stated that her instructions were to sit handy keeping the gelding out of the kickback and to achieve the best possible placing. Jockey explained that although she jumped level, the gelding wasn't travelling well enough to hold her position and so had to give ground halfway down the back straight but, in doing so, found herself in the kickback and that's why she switched wide. Jockey added that once out of the kickback, she asked the gelding to make up ground to join the rear of the field, but was concerned when he failed to pick up and felt that he was moving poorly so she allowed him to come home in his own time. Trainers' rep confirmed the instructions and was satisfied with the ride, given the rider's concern that the gelding was moving poorly) (op 6/1 tchd 8/1)
