Jumped right on occasions, held up in rear, not fluent 16th, still plenty to do when pushed along after 3 out, no impression 2 out, 15 lengths down last, ridden and stayed on run-in, nearest finish (jockey said, regarding running and riding, that his instructions were to ride gelding mid-division to three-quarters of the way back, with the aim of being in striking distance from turning in; he had got further back than intended in first half of race, and that on second circuit gelding felt flat out; jockey acknowledged that he was too sympathetic in his riding, letting gelding get too far out of his ground, putting this down to his inexperience in the saddle; he continued that he had tried to urge gelding along at top of the hill but accepted that his effort was limited and that he only demonstrated real vigour in the saddle having jumped second last fence, where gelding finished very strongly up the hill; trainer stated that he agreed with the instructions given but informed stewards that the ride which jockey had given did not accord with them; he expanded that he had been keen to claim off the gelding, but that in hindsight jockey's ride was one of real inexperience and one that had come at too early a stage in rider's career; in his opinion the jockey should have been closer from the outset, ridden the gelding more vigorously on final circuit and not allowed gelding to become detached) (op 4/1 tchd 10/3)
Lost many lengths start, in rear, headway 9th, in touch with leaders 4 out, went fourth before 2 out, weakened last (trainer said gelding was unsuited by the ground, described as soft, and would prefer a faster surface) (op 6/1)
