Tuesday's EFL predictions

Sunderland missed the chance to return to the top of the Championship on Saturday, but they have enjoyed an excellent start to the season nonetheless and should be too strong for Derby at the Stadium of Light.

Standards have been raised on Wearside and much of the credit must go to Regis le Bris, who took charge of the Black Cats this summer.

Le Bris inherited a team who finished 16th last term and his rebuild was made more difficult by the sale of star attacker Jack Clarke towards the end of the transfer window.

However, the Frenchman has got Sunderland playing some energetic and effective football, and he would have taken plenty more positives from Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Watford even if the Mackems did leave Hertfordshire empty handed.

Sunderland have won their first three home games of the season and their relentless approach should pave the way to success over Derby, who slipped into the bottom half following Saturday's 3-2 loss at home to Norwich.

The Rams are yet to pick up a point on the road this season and that is unlikely to change before the October international break.

League One promotion hopefuls Wigan have been frustrated by a trio of consecutive 0-0 draws but their fortune in front of goal could turn against Peterborough .

Shaun Maloney's Latics have found it tricky to break down deep-lying defences, although they could point to the positives after the weekend goalless draw at home to Exeter because the shot count finished 16 to five in their favour.

Wigan are keen to avoid another hard luck story and they should flourish against attack-minded Posh, who are far from watertight at the back.

Darren Ferguson's side, who played their part in a thrilling 3-2 defeat at Birmingham on Saturday, can be exhilarating in attack, but they have shipped seven goals in their last three games and defeat may beckon in Lancashire.

Burton are one of two winless teams in League One but they can avoid defeat on their trip to Reading.

Mark Robinson's Brewers were beaten 3-0 at Blackpool on Saturday but they had taken home a point on each of their previous three third-tier road trips.

Albion struggled against Blackpool, who are one of the division's form sides, but they can compete on more even terms with inconsistent Reading, who have lost three of their last five league fixtures.
