Towards rear, pushed along and outpaced before 2 out, nudged along and some headway approaching last, hung badly right run-in, never near to challenge (an enquiry was held into the running and riding of the gelding which travelled towards the rear throughout and appeared to be tenderly handled in the home straight to finish eighth of fifteen, beaten by 13 1/4l; the rider and trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the vet said that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities; the rider stated his instructions were to take his time and get him jumping in a rhythm as the gelding is not the most fluent jumper at home; he added that he was denied a clear run turning into the home straight and that the gelding hung left-handed and then veered sharply right-handed away from the whip on the run to the line; the trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that he was satisfied that the ride accorded with those instructions; their explanations were noted but Todd was fined £140 for failing to report at scales that the gelding hung sharply right-handed shortly after jumping the final hurdle) (op 4/1)
