Chased leaders, hit 8th, chased winner 4 out, weakened 2 out, 20 lengths 2nd when clambered over last, stopped to walk, eventually completed (the Stewards held an enquiry to consider why the rider had continued in the race when his horse appeared to be very tired. They interviewed the rider and the Veterinary Officer, who reported that a post-race examination failed to reveal any abnormalities and that the geldings heart and respiratory rate were post-race normal. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards accepted the riders explanation that the gelding had jumped the three previous fences in the home straight well and he had not considered that it would be contrary to the horses welfare to jump the last fence. He added that he accepted he would be second a long way from the last and was satisfied that the gelding was able to jump the last fence, but having committed to jump the last fence, the geldings stride shortened quickly and he lost momentum causing his mount to clamber over the obstacle. He further added that having come to a virtual standstill, his mount broke back into a canter without any encouragement and he therefore felt it was safe to continue to the line to finish in second place.
