Summer is over but the stars are coming out as September Stakes signals start of busy autumn campaign
Summer has ended, the rain has arrived, but there is no time to feel sorry for ourselves with a busy autumn schedule to get stuck into, beginning with Kempton's Unibet September Stakes (2.35) in which star names often get more than they bargained for en route to bigger and better things.
It might be a Group 3 but it often takes a Group 1 horse to win it. For some it is a convenient stepping stone, as was the case with two-time winner Enable, Mostahdaf and last year's winner Bay Bridge, all of whom went on to contest the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe next time with varying success.
For others, the September Stakes is a target in itself, a chance for a horse at peak fitness to add another Group race to their CV. Predicting whether class will prevail will be key to finding the winner, but it is not always straightforward – just ask the connections of the Derby winners beaten here.
