'Take the 6-1 available, it's a gift' - David Jennings answers the big questions ahead of a super Sunday
David Jennings answers Sunday's burning questions after picking out 25-1 Sprint Cup winner Montassib last weekend . . .
What's the big story?
Take your pick from four Group 1s on a cracking Curragh card as we rock on to day two of the Irish Champions Festival.
The Moyglare Stud Stakes (3.00) is the one which floats my particular boat as the runaway Chesham Stakes heroine Bedtime Story tries to put stablemate Lake Victoria to bed, as well as the promising Red Letter and Albany Stakes runner-up Simmering, who won a Group 2 at Deauville last time. A small field full of big reputations. Something's got to give.
The overall star of the show is Kyprios, the best stayer in the business who bids to make it five from five for the season in the Comer Group International Irish St Leger (4.45). Giavellotto will give him his fill of it.
So, who wins the Irish St Leger?
Oh, probably Kyprios. He usually wins, doesn't he. He's won 12 of his 16 starts and has been flawless so far this season. Indeed, his Goodwood Cup romp was so relentless it got us debating whether he might actually be better than Yeats. A seventh Group 1 success here would edge him ever closer to the greatest stayer of them all at Ballydoyle.
It is easy to see Giavellotto cruising up on his outside early in the home straight, but will he go by? Probably not.
And what about the Flying Five Stakes?
Bradsell could boss it from start to finish, as he did in the Nunthorpe, but the fact of the matter is that he's finished fourth of five and seventh of ten on his two trips to the Curragh. Taking 6-4 doesn't seem so appealing now.
In contrast, Bucanero Fuerte has already won three times at the Curragh and there were far more positives than negatives to be taken out of his Sprint Cup showing. He just seemed to blow up, forgivable given he hadn't been seen on a racecourse since May. It's a bold move bringing him back so soon, but it could pay spectacular dividends.
What's the bet of the day?
Soaring Monarch is the best bet at the Curragh in the concluding Irish Stallion Farms EBF Northfields Handicap (5.55), but the banker is most definitely Paborus in the 7f handicap (2.40) at Doncaster.
He was too fizzy and did too much too soon when upped to a mile in a hot affair at York. Back over seven furlongs in calmer waters should see him in a much better light, and he's so much better than his current handicap mark of 90. He's a stakes horse in the making, if you ask me. Take the 6-1 available, it's a gift.
Who's the lay of the day?
Is Henri Matisse all he is cracked up to be? I know he's three from three, but he was allowed to go off at 8-1 for the Railway Stakes, so must have been down the pecking order at that stage. Aomori City and Hill Road are viable alternatives against him in the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (4.10).
