Four horses who will be suited by soft ground at Ascot on Friday - including a €450,000 brother to Saffron Beach
Ascot was hit by 13.5mm of rain on Thursday and the going is soft for Friday's afternoon meeting. Here we pick out four horses who will be suited by the ease in the ground . . .
Law Supreme
Law Supreme's sole win for Ian Williams came on soft ground at Bath in April and he returned to form when second in the same conditions at Windsor last time.
His best form in France before joining Williams was on easy ground and conditions should suit in the opening mile female amateur riders' handicap.
Law Supreme is the mount of Jody Townend, who won the Queen Mother's Cup at York on Kihavah on her first Flat ride in Britain last year and has plenty of experience from riding over both codes in Ireland.
Look Back Smiling
The Gemma Tutty-trained Look Back Smiling is aiming to bounce back after finishing last of 17 at York in May, but should have conditions in his favour.
Two of the four-year-old's five wins have come on soft ground, while he posted close to a career-best Racing Post Rating when winning on heavy ground at Doncaster. If the expected rain continues and the ground becomes testing, he should relish conditions underfoot.
That win last October came over seven furlongs, the trip he returns to here, and Tutty is on course for a season-best campaign.
Theoryofeverything
Theoryofeverything represents David O'Meara and will be suited by conditions when lining up in the mile handicap.
His sole win in six starts since joining O'Meara was on soft ground at Hamilton on his penultimate start, while his debut win for the Gosdens at Doncaster came in the same conditions in April last year.
His last two Racing Post Ratings suggest there could be mileage in his mark of 90 and victory here would enhance his Cambridgeshire claims. He is 50-1 with William Hill for the big Newmarket handicap on September 28.
Granger Bay
This lightly raced colt has shown his best form on soft ground, with runner-up efforts at Yarmouth and Newmarket, and catches the eye in the concluding 7f handicap.
The Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained colt is a brother to former stable star Saffron Beach, who was versatile regarding ground. She won the Prix Rothschild on good to soft and registered a Group 3 victory and Matron second in two starts on soft.
Granger Bay cost €450,000 as a yearling and is open to more improvement on just his second handicap start.
