Tote Ten to Follow leader can bank on Economics at Ascot

Economics: none the worse for his Irish Champion Stakes exersions

There is a simple pattern to the Tote Ten to Follow leaderboard with the first nine teams containing both Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Bluestocking and Prix du Cadran winner Kyprios and eight of those nine teams running under the name of Robert Winchcole.

The only squad to make a dent in that monopoly belongs to MyCatMeatball, while bringing up tenth place is the longtime leader, the Bluestocking-less Rectory Pole.

Bluestocking contributed 59.20 points for her third win of the competition, while Kyprios – who is headed in the list of leading horses by only City Of Troy and is the most popular pick as he features in 70.1% of teams – added a further 27.25 points as he rampaged through the staying division.

It was not a perfect weekend for the leading team as Bradsell could not cope with Makarova in the Prix de l’Abbaye and Inspiral had to play second fiddle to Tamfana in Saturday’s Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket.

That was hardly a major concern for Winchcole, though, as his second string includes Tamfana, who contributed 29.70 in the Sun Chariot, while just 0.2% of teams contain Makarova, who picked up 51.40 points in the Abbaye to move into tenth spot on the table.

In 11th place comes Friendly Soul, who scored 37.80 points in landing the Prix de l’Opera, while Illinois moves into 18th thanks to 22.50 points from success in Saturday’s Prix Chaudenay

As the competition moves into its final fortnight and a last-day showdown at Ascot on Qipco British Champions Day, the leader is well placed to extend his advantage as he has the Champion Stakes market leaders Economics and Calandagan included in his main squad and in several other lists.

Calandagan was brought into his team during the pre-Ebor festival transfer window and so has contributed only 14.30 points so far, from a total seasonal tally of 42.95 and, significantly, represents just 4.3% of stables, highlighting the shrewdness with which Winchcole has planned his campaign to land the competition’s first prize.
