The Lakeside World Darts Championships kicks off with the game of the round as Martin Adams bids to turn back the clock in a showdown with second seed Mark McGeeney.

Five-time finalist Wolfie can’t wait to return to the oche after winning a battle with prostate cancer and a heel injury.

His form, by his own admission, is up and down, but the 61-year-old knows he has the game to beat anyone, including World Masters finalist McGeeney.

The Gladiator doesn’t look comfortable on the big stage. He couldn’t get out of his group at either the Grand Slam or Finder Masters and has failed to get past the last 16 on his two visits to Frimley Green.

Danny Noppert, beaten finalist 12 months ago, finds himself starting from the preliminary round this year but that shouldn’t represent too daunting a challenge.

Noppert is a class act and can whitewash American Joe Chaney, whose trips to England have only ever ended in failure.
