Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic prediction
MMA legends Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic will face off for the UFC Heavyweight Championship in the early hours of Sunday at UFC 309 in New York’s historic Madison Square Garden.
Current champion Jones is considered by many to be the sport’s greatest ever fighter, setting multiple records at light heavyweight including becoming the UFC’s youngest champion in 2011 at 23.
A controversial figure, the 37-year-old won the Heavyweight title in the first round against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 last year, some three years after vacating the 205 lb title.
While an original bout with Miocic was booked for this time last year, a Jones injury saw the fight delayed by 12 months.
Miocic, meanwhile, hasn’t competed since losing a rematch with Francis Ngannou thanks to a devastating second-round knockout in March 2021.
A two-time heavyweight champion, Miocic's signature wins included coming out on top of a trilogy bout with Daniel Cormier, while he has also beaten the likes of Ngannou, Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum.
Jones looked a potential force at heavyweight in his win over Gane and he can be fancied to claim victory inside the distance against a rival who is five years his senior.
Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler predictions
Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler meet in a highly anticipated rematch which appears unlikely to go beyond the second round.
The pair fought for the vacant lightweight title in 2021 in the wake of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement and Oliveira secured a second-round TKO to win the belt, although Chandler also had some big moments in what was a wild first round.
Brazilian ace Oliveira is a finishing machine – 20 of his 22 UFC wins ending inside the distance, with sixteen submissions.
Former Bellator champion Chandler is 2-3 in the UFC and has only seen the judges scorecards once, in 2021’s fight of the year against Justin Gaethje.
The 38-year-old has not been seen since losing to Dustin Poirier in 2022 due to his pursuit of being Conor McGregor’s return opponent.
With Oliveira and Chandler’s styles it is unlikely the full 25 minute distance will be needed, with a conclusion likely playing out in the first half of the fight.
UFC 309 undercard predictions
Eyecatching striker Mauricio Ruffy gets a shot on the main card in only his second UFC appearance and he could make light work of James Llontop.
The Brazilian hails from the in-form Fighting Nerds team, who have several emerging contenders across multiple divisions.
The 28-year-old dismantled Jamie Mullarkey on his debut in May, with an exquisite flying knee starting his finishing TKO sequence.
Ruffy and opponent Llontop both made it to the UFC via Dana White’s Contender Series, however the latter is yet to get off the mark in two attempts since winning his contract.
Llontop throws in volume which could play into Ruffy’s low-hand karate style, which at times is reminiscent of a young Conor McGregor.
Ruffy has ended all ten of his professional wins by TKO and this match-up could provide him with another finishing opportunity.
Who is on the UFC 309 main card?
Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic (for the UFC Heavyweight Championship)
Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler
Bo Nickal vs Paul Craig
Viviane Araujo vs Karine Silva
Mauricio Ruffy vs James Llontop
