WTA Tokyo predictions

Home hero Naomi Osaka and American talent Jessica Pegula are among the players to have withdrawn from the WTA Tokyo, which begins at the Ariake Coliseum on Monday.

The season's last WTA 500 event still features a handful of big names but one player who could capitalise on the weakened draw is Daria Kasatkina.

Currently 11th in the WTA rankings, there will be no place for Kasatkina in the WTA Finals in Riyadh in November but she is nonetheless finishing the season strongly.

A talented hard-court operator, Kastakina was crowned Ningbo Open champion in China on Sunday, defeating the likes of Paula Badosa and Mirra Andreeva en route to the title.

Having lost four singles finals in 2024, getting over the line in China will have done Kasatkina's confidence the world of good and she should fear no one in the WTA Tokyo draw.

Qinwen Zheng is expected to come out on top in Japan after some strong performances in the China Open and Wuhan Open but she will not have home advantage on her side this time around.

Diana Shnaider is another player expected to go well but she heads into the tournament on a three-game losing run.

The ATP Vienna is one of two ATP 500 events taking place this week along with the WTA Basel.

Alex Zverev leads the way in Austria, while the likes of Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud will battle it out for glory in Switzerland.
