2024 WTA Finals predictions

Questions abound at the WTA Finals but there's no denying who the favourite is for the season-ending showpiece which has made the move to Riyadh for at least the next three years.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka, the holder of both hard-court Grand Slam titles and on a run of 20 wins from her last 21 matches, is no bigger than 7-4 and will be difficult to stop with conditions at the King Saud University Indoor Arena expected to suit.

While the venue has changed, the format remains the same with two groups of four competing in round-robin matches from Saturday to Friday with the top two from each section progressing to the semi-finals.

Sabalenka is in the Purple Group alongside dual Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini, Elena Rybakina – whose fitness has to be taken on trust given that she's completed two matches since Wimbledon – and Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng.

Iga Swiatek, back in action for the first time since the US Open and with Wim Fissette now in her coaching box, heads the Orange Group which also includes Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and surprise Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova.

While Sabalenka is the one to beat, Zheng is playing well enough to cap a superb season by winning this title at much more attractive odds. The Chinese player has been on a marvellous run, reaching the semis in Beijing and Wuhan and winning the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo last time out.

Zheng trails Sabalenka 4-0 in head-to-head meetings but she took a set off the Belarusian for the first time in Wuhan and is steadily narrowing the gap, while the round-robin format offers her a chance of reaching the semi-finals even if she fails to beat Sabalenka in Sunday's opener.

With Swiatek's level difficult to gauge, Gauff appeals as a bet to win the Orange Group.

The 20-year-old American has a poor head-to-head record against both the Pole and her compatriot Pegula but she is unquestionably the form player in the section, winning the China Open before she was beaten in three sets by Sabalenka in the Wuhan semi-finals.
