Jannik Sinner vs Taylor Fritz predictions

Jannik Sinner has taken full advantage of the early eliminations of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic and the Italian world number one should finish in style by claiming the US Open title at Taylor Fritz’s expense.

Sinner started the season by claiming his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January and, although he had a turbulent summer, he has found peak form when it matters most in New York City.

The 23-year-old warmed up for the final major of the season with a title success in Cincinnati and he has carried that form into Flushing Meadows, dropping only two sets in his six tournament victories.

One of those dropped sets came in the quarter-final against hard-court specialist Daniil Medvedev but his 7-5 7-6 6-2 semi-final victory over Jack Draper hinted that he is now operating at the peak of his powers.

Sinner will have a rowdy American crowd to contend with but Fritz, featuring in his maiden Grand Slam final, may struggle to make the most of the hostile environment.

It has been a career-best tournament for Fritz, who has claimed the scalps of Matteo Berrettini, Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev and Frances Tiafoe, but Sinner is a different calibre of opposition when in this mood.

The Italian has lost only two of his 36 hard-court matches this season and has dropped a set in only four of his last 16 victories on this quicker surface, which highlights what Fritz is coming up against.

Fritz’s precision and power should keep him competitive early on but losing the opening set could be curtains and the value may lie with Sinner recording a straight-set success.

Sinner was broken only once in his semi-final victory over Draper while quarter-final victim Medvedev could break him only twice, showing the task that Fritz is faced with.

When the world number one is confident and on song, there are few weaknesses to his game and, while Fritz is proving himself to be a strong hard-court performer, the American is unlikely to be able to match him when the stakes are this high.
