Saturday's US Open predictions

Carlos Alcaraz's shock US Open exit has blown the second quarter of the men's singles draw wide open and one player who could benefit is British number one Jack Draper.

Draper had been on course to face Alcaraz in Saturday's third-round action but he will instead take on the Spaniard's unlikely conqueror Botic van de Zandschulp. The Londoner is just 1-4 to progress to the fourth round and 21-10 favourite to win the quarter.

World number one Jannik Sinner, another who could profit from Alcaraz's 1-50 defeat, takes on Christopher O'Connell on day six while women's top seed Iga Swiatek meets Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

David Goffin vs Tomas Machac predictions

Saturday's big favourites are hard to oppose at Flushing Meadows so it could pay to focus on the tighter contests, starting with what should be a lengthy clash between David Goffin and Tomas Machac.

Machac is capable of brilliance and he blew Sebastian Korda off the court on Thursday but a meeting with a resurgent, always-dogged Goffin provides him with a different test.

The veteran Belgian has won nine of his last 11 matches and he pushed Machac to five sets at Wimbledon last month, which suggests their second meeting can eclipse the 36.5-game line.

Matteo Arnaldi vs Jordan Thompson predictions

Jordan Thompson downed Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets in round two and the Australian can reach the fourth round at the expense of Matteo Arnaldi.

Thompson has won ten of his last 13 matches, with two of his three defeats coming against high-class rivals in Alexander Zverev and Korda. He can see off Arnaldi, who profited from a poor Roman Safiullin performance in round two.

Karolina Muchova vs Anastasia Potapova predictions

Injuries have hampered Karolina Muchova's career but she is brilliant when her body allows her to be and her second-round victory over two-time champion Naomi Osaka hinted that the Czech is on the verge of another big fortnight.

Muchova is back up to speed after a nine-month spell on the sidelines and she can advance in straight sets against Anastasia Potapova, who she beat 7-6 6-2 in Montreal last year before going on to reach the Cincinnati final and the US Open semi-finals.

Ashlyn Krueger vs Liudmila Samsonova predictions

World rankings do not always tell the full story and American Ashlyn Krueger, ranked 43 places below Liudmila Samsonova on the WTA Tour, has every chance of delighting the New York crowd with a victory.

Krueger is a steadily improving performer who has caught the eye this summer, beating 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez in Canada, Osaka and Wimbledon semi-finalist Donna Vekic in Cincinnati and most recently Mirra Andreeva in round two in New York.

Samsonova is a solid hard-court performer but Krueger is full of confidence and can claim another big scalp.
