David Cup 2024 predictions

The Davis Cup will be the final tournament in the illustrious career of 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, but the legendary Spaniard’s farewell may be overshadowed as Italy look set for a successful title defence.

Spain, represented by Nadal and his younger compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, will have the advantage of home support at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga.

However, that adds to the pressure and Nadal’s only competitive appearance since the Olympic Games in July came at the Six Kings Slam Exhibition in October, when he showed only minor promise as he was soundly beaten in straight sets by Novak Djokovic and Alcaraz.

So Nadal’s wellbeing is taken on trust and it remains to be seen how much he will be utilised, while Alcaraz also has to prove has his form following five defeats in his last nine matches, making Italy worthy favourites to repeat last season’s title triumph.

Anything world number one Jannik Sinner touches at present seems to turn to gold, and he claimed his eighth title during a stellar 2024 at the ATP Finals last week. He now spearheads the Italy team alongside Lorenzo Musetti and Matteo Berrettini.

Sinner won all five of his matches at the ATP Finals in straight sets, meaning he has recorded victory in 26 of his last 27 assignments, and he can again inspire his country to victory.

Italy take on Argentina in their quarter-final before locking horns with Australia or the USA, which would look a tougher route to the title decider on paper than Spain's.

But the hosts have enough to prove and, while they should have the Netherlands’ measure in the last eight, 2022 champions Canada would pose a stern challenge were they to collide in the final four.

The Canadians may be without the services of Felix Auger-Aliassime but they have two in-form players in Denis Shapovalov and Gabriel Diallo and they would represent a good bet to win Wednesday’s encounter with Germany, who are missing world number two Alexander Zverev.

All fixtures feature two singles contests and a doubles match and the first to two points progresses to the next round, with the champion crowned on Sunday.
