Australian Open men's singles predictions

Last season cemented a changing of the guard in men’s tennis with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz sharing the four Grand Slam titles evenly between them and bookmakers expect their dominance to continue at the 2025 Australian Open.

World number one Sinner has the easier draw in his bid to make it a successful title defence but that is very much factored into his price and there are ongoing doping allegations which have overshadowed his preparation.

There is still the potential for Sinner to be banned later in the season and that unwanted press could cause problems.

Despite being still only 21, Alcaraz has won four of the last eight Grand Slam titles and the Spaniard looks the value call to put a poor Australian Open record behind him.

The Murcia man has made only one quarter-final in three previous trips to Melbourne Park but Grand Slam titles at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open show that he has no trouble adjusting to conditions.

Alcaraz will become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam if triumphant in this tournament and he would be fancied to have Novak Djokovic’s measure were they to clash in a blockbuster quarter-final.

Last season was the first year since 2017 that 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic failed to claim Major silverware and the 37-year-old has plenty to prove despite having won the Australian Open ten times. Djokovic was beaten 7-6 6-3 by world number 171 Reilly Opelka in the quarter-final of his warm-up event at the Brisbane International and it would be a big surprise were one of Sinner or Alcaraz not to reign supreme.

World number two Alexander Zverev may pose the sternest test before the final but the German has the increasing pressure of trying to claim a belated Grand Slam crown and his chances are wearing thin.

Even if Alcaraz was to set up a title decider with Sinner, the Spanish sensation leads their personal series 6-4 and he will be buoyed by having won their last three head-to-head meetings, which makes him of firm interest at 7-2.

With three-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev arriving in Australia late after welcoming the birth of his second child, he may be vulnerable to big-serving American Taylor Fritz in the second quarter.

Fritz was a quarter-finalist in Melbourne last season before breaking new ground by finishing runner-up in the US Open, showing that fast-paced courts bring out the best in him.

The fourth seed, who played a key role in helping the USA clinch the United Cup at Poland’s expense last week, is in fine fettle and may celebrate with another deep run.
