ATP China Open preview

Jannik Sinner heads to Beijing for the ATP China Open as favourite, hoping to make it a successful title defence, and the Italian world number one should take plenty of stopping.

The 23-year-old has been in a rich vein of form ever since losing in the quarter-final in Montreal in early August, winning in Cincinnati before claiming his second Grand Slam title of the season at the US Open.

Unlike chief title rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev, Sinner snubbed the recent Laver Cup and has taken things easily since his commanding 6-3 6-4 7-5 success over Taylor Fritz in the Flushing Meadows final.

The Italian also gets to avoid Alcaraz and Medvedev until the final of the 32-player event in Beijing, as Sinner’s toughest route before then would be against Grigor Dimitrov in the last eight before a showdown with Andrey Rublev in the semi-final.

Sinner has lost only two of 24 matches since the French Open in June and leads Dimitrov 4-1 in their personal series, while the man from the Dolomites has won four of his last five meetings with Rublev, suggesting a final berth should be his for the taking.

That makes him a worthy favourite to follow up last season’s success, which saw him ease past Alcaraz 7-6 6-1 in the semi-final before mastering Medvedev in straight sets in the title decider.

Medvedev was beaten in both of his singles matches at the Laver Cup by American duo Frances Tiafoe and Fritz, so the Russian has a bit to prove with Alcaraz evidently Sinner’s toughest opponent.

However, the Spaniard suffered surprise defeats to Gael Monfils and Botic van de Zandschulp in Cincinnati and at the US Open last month, while also dropping sets against Li Tu and Tomas Machac in between, showing plenty of inconsistent signs.

Of those at bigger prices, Chinese teenager Juncheng Shang may be capable of giving the home crowd something to celebrate as he bids to build on his recent title triumph at the Chengdu Open.

Shang defeated Lorenzo Musetti in Tuesday’s final and he would be an interesting proposition to come through the second quarter in Beijing, although markets were slow to develop.
