Preview
Athletic Bilbao v Real Sociedad
One of the fiercest rivalries in La Liga takes centre stage on Sunday with Athletic Bilbao hosting Real Sociedad in the Basque derby and heavy fixture lists for both clubs recently point towards a cagey affair at the San Mames.
Both these teams have played four matches already this month with Bilbao advancing to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and Real Sociedad playing in both the Spanish cup competition and Europa League knockout stages.
In their European clash on Thursday, La Real battled bravely to earn a 2-2 draw with Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena, where they were without star forward Alexander Isak.
And with the Swede also potentially set to miss this derby encounter, Imanol Alguacil’s men may have to again play more conservatively.
Given the congested nature of the European positions in La Liga, a point may be viewed as a decent result by both camps and backing a stalemate, which was the result in the reverse fixture this term, could be the way to go.
Borussia Dortmund v Borussia Monchengladbach
Following their humiliating 4-2 defeat at home to Rangers on Thursday night, Borussia Dortmund’s hierarchy reportedly held ‘crisis talks’ with manager Marco Rose.
But while the result was a setback, the club are by no means in a disastrous position domestically, going into the weekend trailing leaders Bayern Munich by only six points in second spot.
Their crucial target of achieving Champions League qualification still looks a probability and they can regain some confidence by recording a home win over Gladbach, who have had a dreadful league campaign, collecting only 26 points from 22 games.
They are hovering above the drop zone and are worth opposing at the Signal Iduna Park.
Venezia v Genoa
Two sides battling relegation in Italy square up in Venice on Sunday and the hosts are worth backing in the draw-no-bet market.
Venezia and Genoa are both in the bottom three going into this weekend’s contest but they are separated by six points.
While Genoa have pulled off only one win all season in Serie A, Venezia have five to their name, beating Torino 2-1 away last time out in their latest triumph.
They were also competitive in tough matches with Inter and Napoli beforehand and look the most likely to seize the initiative in this six-pointer.
