Stage Six preview

Wout van Aert exemplified Team Jumbo-Visma's depth as he claimed victory on stage five of the 2020 Tour de France into Privas.

After powering the peloton up the final climb to help teammate Primoz Roglic to success on Tuesday's first mountain-top finish of the Tour, the Belgian was just as impressive, bursting from the pack to seal his second career win at the Grande Boucle, his fifth since the sport restarted.

Deceuninck-Quick Step's Julian Alaphilippe retained the yellow jersey and is joined at the top of the classifications by teammate Sam Bennett, who has taken charge in the points competition.

Save for Van Aert's late brilliance, the stage was a somewhat sedate affair, as the peloton took their chance to rest and save themselves for a big day on Thursday.

Stage six sees the riders head back into the mountains, traversing a 191km route between Le Teil and Mont Aigoual, a climb best known for its role in Tim Krabbe's 1978 novel The Rider.

The book follows Krabbe on a five-hour journey as he looks to conquer the Tour de Mont Aigoual, discussing both the mental and physical strain of cycling as a metaphor for life.

The 2020 peloton may not feel the same hurt as the Dutchman but those who do will be quickly left behind, as after quiet opening 165km or so they first ascend the category one Col de la Lusette before a brief bit of respite turns into an 8km drag to the finish.

Purists will hope for a breakaway success but Jumbo-Visma are likely to quell any threat as Roglic pursues his maiden yellow jersey.
The Slovenian was imperious as he won the sprint to Orcieres-Merlette and is seven seconds behind Alaphilippe, who himself is a general 14-1 chance, in the overall standings.

After Van Aert's success on Wednesday, he admitted he would be returning to domestique duties, so expect to see him and Sepp Kuss driving the peloton through the final stages.

There is a feeling around the sport that Jumbo-Visma's form is too good to last three weeks but while they are hot, it will take a mighty ride for anyone to beat their leader.
