Sue Gray report: Next Tory leader betting odds & Boris Johnson exit date odds

Rishi Sunak favourite to be next Conservative leader

Boris Johnson's odds on an early departure from Downing Street have lengthened
Boris Johnson is 4-7 to leave his post by the end of 2022

Monday's long-awaited publication of Sue Gray's report into Downing Street parties during lockdown - or at least a partial version of it - has done little to change bookmakers' perception of when prime minister Boris Johnson is likely to leave his post.

While it's still odds-on that Johnson leaves number ten at some point this year, his price has eased since the end of last week, he is 4-7 from 4-9 to leave his post by the end of 2022.

The key phrase in Gray's findings was her reference to a "failure of leadership", but most senior Tory MPs are in no rush to condemn Johnson.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is the 15-8 favourite to become the next leader of the Conservative Party.

It's an open heat though, with foreign secretary Liz Truss, former health secretary Jeremy Hunt and Tonbridge & West Malling MP Tom Tugenhadt all quoted at single-figure odds.

With the cost of living spiralling, tensions growing in eastern Europe and Covid still affecting everyday life, it's perhaps no surprise that many are reluctant to throw their hat in the ring.

Johnson is no bigger than 5-2 to remain as prime minister until 2024 or later - the anticipated time of the next general election.
