Grand Final preview
The support of a continent is rightly behind Ukraine and while it complicates Eurovision 2022 from a betting perspective, it’s a small worry in the grand scheme of things.
If one in five people grant Ukraine their vote they should do enough to garner victory in Saturday's extravaganza. While they are short at 1-3, that looks the most likely eventuality and steering clear of the outright market looks sensible.
Sweden gave a masterclass in Thursday’s semi-final. Cornelia Jakobs has star quality to burn and her perfectly-pitched gravelly vocal is pop heaven. They appeal as the most likely jury winner from a good draw in stall 20.
The United Kingdom make the market but look a short price at 6-4 given Sam Ryder hasn’t always nailed the vocals and doesn’t have the experience of a semi-final behind him. Sweden rate a strong selection for jury victory at the prices.
Should the UK not perform to expectations, the top-four berths are wide open for outsiders. It wouldn’t be a massive surprise if a 200-1 shot made the podium so punters should not be put off if they like one at wild prices.
The Netherlands have a superbly haunting contemporary song performed in Dutch. It will do well with jurors and it could make the frame if televoters latch on. Take the Dutch each-way in the market without Ukraine in the hope of landing both win and place bets.
Eurovision specials
As for the specials, Serbia have an excellent overall package and a terrific draw in slot eight. They look good for a top-ten finish.
It’s great to see the UK out of the running for last place. Perennial wooden spoon contenders Germany lead that market but Switzerland has an extremely dull entry which may struggle for votes.
In the same market, Czech Republic produced a ropey semi-final display and could be forgotten as the show opener.
Australia head to Turin with a performer who has vocal range to rival anyone in the contest in the last ten years. Juries place a lot of emphasis on vocal capacity and while 33-1 to win the jury vote
is tempting, odds of 5-6 about the Aussie achieving at least one 12-point verdict from any jury are more attractive.
