UK Championship day two predictions

Sunday’s offering from the UK Championship features four matches headlined by former winners Mark Selby and Mark Allen, and that pair will be hoping to avoid the upset which was endured by defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan against Barry Hawkins on day one.

Selby, champion in 2012 and 2016, is expected to justify favouritism against Jack Lisowski but Allen, winner two seasons ago, may have to dig a little deeper to fend off the challenge of Jackson Page.

Allen has yet to click into top gear this season and, while he made the semi-final of the Champion of Champions most recently, his performances were rough around the edges.

The Pistol made hard work of beating Igor Figueiredo and Jak Jones before proving no match for Xiao Guodong, suffering a 6-3 defeat with a highest break of only 65.

Page, in contrast, looks to be operating at the top of his game and he built on a quarter-final run at the International Championship with qualifying wins over dangerous duo Jamie Clarke and Hossein Vafaei.

The Welshman has come a long way in recent seasons and has the ability to scale much higher than his world ranking of 41, so can be fancied to serve it up to the Northern Irishman.

There is an all-Chinese affair between Si Jiahui and Wu Yize but that looks tricky to call and the contest involving Ali Carter and Ryan Day may present a stronger betting opportunity.

Day overcame Louis Heathcote and Sanderson Lam in qualifying but those were hardly vintage displays and seven defeats in his previous 11 matches highlights his inconsistency.

The Welshman tends to go all in, prioritising his attacking game, and that should allow plenty of chances for Carter to run out a comfortable winner.

The Captain looked back to his best last season with runner-up efforts at the Masters and the Wuhan Open and this tournament could be the springboard for him to kick on this campaign.
