UK Championship day four predictions

The UK Championship first-round clash between Judd Trump and Neil Robertson should be billed as a showdown between two potential tournament winners and it could be a scrap all the way to the finishing line.

The early exit of Ronnie O’Sullivan has left Trump at the head of the title betting but he can’t be taking the challenge of a resurgent Robertson lightly, and the Australian is a qualifier in name only.

Robertson claimed Trump’s scalp at the Champion of Champions two weeks ago, winning 6-4, and he should be feeling pretty sharp following qualifying successes over Oliver Lines and Matthew Stevens.

However, third seed Trump has been one of this season’s form players – he has lost only seven of his 43 matches – and that recent setback against Robertson should spur him on to exact revenge.

But going over the total frames, something which has happened in six of their last seven meetings to be played over a best-of-nine or greater, may be the safest bet in a battle between two heavy hitters.

There are three other matches taking place as the opening round concludes on Tuesday, and Mark Williams is expected to come past Stuart Bingham, who was beaten 6-2 by the Welshman at the Saudi Arabia Masters in September.

Williams won the recent Champion of Champions, defeating Kyren Wilson, Robertson and Xiao Guodong to take the title, and was not only tactically astute but looked in excellent scoring touch.
