Champion of Champions predictions

The second Champion of Champions semi-final sees old foes Neil Robertson and Mark Williams go to war in what promises to be a mouthwatering best-of-11 encounter, and the value may lie with the Welsh Potting Machine.

Williams is often a tricky betting proposition but the manner of his 6-5 victory over world champion Kyren Wilson in their Group Three final on Tuesday suggests that this could be the right time to catch him.

The 49-year-old tends to save himself for the most lucrative events nowadays and he was fully focused and clinical against the Warrior, sealing the deal with breaks of 140, 109, 72, 71 and 56.

Williams had squandered a 5-3 lead but regathered himself exceptionally well given that Wilson had stolen a tight tenth frame when the Welshman was unfortunate with a cannon while only a few pots away from victory.

A resurgent Robertson will have his supporters following tournament wins over Ali Carter and Judd Trump but a tight contest may favour the tactical nous of Williams, who has also shown this week that he can match the Australian’s scoring power.

The Thunder from Down Under claimed his first title in over two years at the English Open, but it would be pushing it to say he is right back to his brilliant best and in Williams he may be meeting an opponent who appears to be coming to the boil.
