Wales vs Australia predictions

Wales head coach Warren Gatland said in June 2023 that he probably would have gone somewhere else had he known the state of Welsh rugby before returning for a second spell, and the New Zealander may still be questioning his decision as his side sit on the brink of making unwanted history.

The Dragons have lost ten Tests in a row, equalling the country's worst-ever run that was set under Steve Hansen in 2002 and 2003. It's hard to make a case for their current crop of players not to suffer an 11th consecutive defeat when a resurgent Australia visit the Principality Stadium on Sunday.

Joe Schmidt's Wallabies stunned Twickenham last weekend when beating England 42-37 - the first time they have won at that stadium since the 2015 World Cup - and they now head to a venue where they have enjoyed considerable success over the last 15 years.

Australia won the last meeting against Wales at the Principality Stadium 39-34 in the 2022 Autumn Internationals, making it nine victories from their last 11 visits to the Cardiff venue, and the two-time world champions have also had recent success against this despondent Welsh side.

The Wallabies won both of their home Tests against Wales in July this year, triumphing 25-16 at the Sydney Football Stadium and 36-28 at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. The hosts failed to cover a ten-point handicap on both of those occasions, but they arrive in Cardiff armed with more attacking threats and should ensure that bet lands this time.

Star centre Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii has been dropped to the replacements' bench for this clash, despite his sensational performance against England in his first professional rugby union game after switching from rugby league, but he will bring that extra bit of zip when brought on and that could prove telling against a fatigued Welsh defence.

This is a dreadful time in Wales' 143-year international history and with a visit of reigning champions South Africa to come next weekend, their losing streak doesn't look like stopping any time soon.

In Sunday's earlier Autumn International match, Italy will be looking to bounce back from a 50-18 thumping by Argentina when they host Georgia at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa.

This won't be an easy task for the Azzurri, though, as they lost to this up-and-coming Georgia side the last time they met in 2022.
