Ireland vs Australia predictions

Australia's unlikely hopes of an autumn slam were ended by Scotland last weekend but they should have enough in the tank to ensure another close-fought battle when they round off the November Tests against Ireland in Dublin.

The Wallabies went down 27-13 at Murrayfield last weekend and if anything the score flattered them as they went over for their only try with five minutes to go and although they were camped on the Scottish line with the clock in the red, they just could not find a way to cross.

But Australia have at least shown they are climbing out of a slump on this tour and they take on an Ireland side still looking to build towards the Six Nations.

Ireland won the northern hemisphere crown this year with Jack Crowley stepping up at fly-half following the retirement of Jonny Sexton, but coach Andy Farrell has decided to stick with rookie Sam Prendergast, who started at number ten against Fiji last week.

There's a fascinating sub-text to this clash as Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt was Ireland's head coach until Farrell, formerly his assistant, took over in 2020, and the two will cross swords again next summer when the British & Irish Lions tour Australia.

The handicap is set in the mid-teens, and Ireland certainly have the firepower to cover, while Australia have been inconsistent enough to suggest we could see a big home win.

However, this has traditionally been a close fixture and, apart from last week's blowout against tier-two Fiji, Ireland have not been piling on points this year.

Ireland have won five of their last six meetings with the Wallabies but none of them by more than five points. Their one defeat in that run was an 18-9 reverse in the first Test in Australia in 2018.

Before putting 52 points on Fiji last week, Ireland's last six totals were 22, 17, 20, 25, 13 and 23 and with rain forecast, they may struggle to post a much higher total.
