Ireland vs Argentina predictions
The Aviva Stadium was stunned into silence last Friday, with some fans even leaving early, as Ireland lost their 19-match unbeaten home run in a tepid 23-13 defeat to New Zealand.
England will testify that losing your opening game of the autumn can set a negative tone and Ireland's next opponents are potentially the worst they could face in their first game after losing to the All Blacks.
Considering their recent form, a double-digit handicap start almost feels disrespectful to Argentina, who beat New Zealand, Australia and South Africa for the first time in a single Rugby Championship campaign earlier this year and travel to Dublin after thrashing Italy 50-18 last week.
Moreover, the Pumas have also recalled vice-captain Pablo Matera following suspension and, after experimenting with other options, have found a long-term solution to their fly-half foibles in the exciting Tomas Albornoz.
Albornoz's swashbuckling style is reminiscent of Juan Martin Hernandez's glory days in the number ten shirt for Argentina, form that often forced Felipe Contepomi, now Argentina's head coach, to feature in the centres.
Contepomi's exploits in his time with Leinster mean he remains a hero in Dublin. Even then he seemed destined for coaching, at one stage spending time overseeing the province's backs, and he took the Pumas top job after Michael Cheika, whom he played under at Leinster, departed following last year's fourth-place finish at the World Cup.
Facing a quality team in good form and able to recall elite players is not exactly ideal for Andy Farrell's odds-on hosts so soon after being undone by the All Blacks.
Farrell has resisted the temptation to make sweeping changes, with centre Robbie Henshaw the only fresh inclusion in Ireland's starting 15, while replacement prop Cian Healy is set to win his 133th international cap and equal Brian O'Driscoll's Irish record.
Ireland's lack of accuracy hurt them against a much-derided yet clinical Kiwi team. The All Blacks showed discipline, something Argentina can struggle with, but the Pumas' passion will be on full display in Dublin and running in seven tries against the Azzurri was an excellent way to build confidence.
Backing the tourists for a first win in Dublin feels like a stretch, but they can still expose any lingering anxiety, especially if the Aviva's support starts to waver like last Friday.
Ireland should win — but don't expect them to run away with it.
