Mark Langdon: I'll have nothing to moan about if Oasis and Villa double cops
Mark Langdon's analysis of the Premier League and his hopes of securing Oasis tickets
Oasis reunion. Announcement Tuesday. After many years of absolute nonsense there was finally a message in a WhatsApp group last Friday that made the app worthwhile.
Once the rumour was confirmed you couldn't move for killjoys telling those who were excited about it all how overrated the Gallagher brothers are, how they aren't that good live, how past it Liam is, why Noel has only brought the band back together to pay for a divorce etc, etc.
Bore off mate. If you don't like them, don't go, but don't let your negativity ruin it for the rest. Go and do something else with your day while we battle the Ticketmaster website with a military-style tactical approach that is so detailed it would get the nod of approval from Pep Guardiola.
But people just love to moan and a classic example of that came this week when the draw for the third round of the League Cup was made using a seeding system to separate those who had qualified for the Champions League and Europa League.
The solution was absolutely logical.
The Champions League starts earlier than the Europa League on split weeks so it would have been impossible to find a slot in the calendar to have played the third round of the EFL Cup had, say, Liverpool been paired with Manchester United. And there would have been even more people complaining of skulduggery had those two teams come out of the hat together, only to be separated again, so the sensible call was to avoid any possibility of it in the first place.
There was no other route around it. Some suggested the big clubs should be forced into playing two matches in two competitions in the same midweek - something that has happened before most notably in recent years for Liverpool and Tottenham - but imagine the complaints of disrespect when a load of unknown kids were handed their debuts in the EFL Cup as teams quite rightly prioritised Europe.
You can argue that Uefa are being greedy for increasing the number of matches played in European competition, or you could say it's really not their problem that only England has this issue. No other elite European league has two cup competitions so why should Uefa's calendar be dictated to by one nation?
Many of those complaining that the game has gone told us a few months ago that the death of the FA Cup was around the corner after revenue streams of smaller clubs was being cut off by the decision to ditch FA Cup replays. EFL teams relied upon this income and the Premier League giants were denying dreams of lower-league players by removing one possible route to a trip to a glamour ground.
The alteration of the EFL Cup third round has thrown up Barnsley being drawn to play at United, while Bolton go to Arsenal and Watford head to Manchester City. Meanwhile, Coventry and Wycombe get to host Tottenham and Aston Villa. That is literally what many people wanted from the FA Cup.
There are times when our football administrators deserve a good bashing. However, this isn't one of them, and after the midweek bore-draw shenanigans we can return to the good old Premier League because nobody ever complains about anything in that competition.
After (hopefully) the morning glory of securing Oasis tickets there is a decent bet on the Premier League card as Villa look overpriced to beat a Leicester side who have been outplayed for large chunks by Spurs and Fulham since returning to the top flight.
Villa have already won a harder away game at West Ham this term and could well have downed Arsenal last week had Ollie Watkins not been so wasteful in front of goal. At a shade of odds-on Unai Emery's side might help pay for the Saturday morning splurge.
