The Kansas City Chiefs are taking over the mantle of the team NFL fans find hard to love but there is no doubting their ability and their 7-0 record underlines their chance of winning the Super Bowl for a third successive season.

They are the new version of the New England Patriots in the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era, a team who look almost destined to always be involved in the end-of-season extravaganza and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the latest team aiming to knock them down a peg or two at Arrowhead tonight.

Some questionable refereeing decisions and controversial plays by quarterback Patrick Mahomes may have helped the Chiefs to remain unbeaten, but they do not look significant reasons to avoid backing them on the spread, even though they are giving up nine points to their visitors from Florida.

Tampa Bay are 4-4 but when they have lost this season, it has tended to be by a hefty margin. They were beaten by more than ten points by  the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens, while NFC South rivals Atlanta, a team classed by many as of similar ability, have come out on top by six and five-point margins in their two games against the Bucs.

It is not just by using Mahomes’s dynamic abilities that the Chiefs can pull teams apart and their strengths on the other side of the ball could prove telling in this game as the Bucs have to deal with a long injury list.

The Chiefs have given up an average of just 19.3 points in their three home matches and they are ranked in the top five in terms of points, yards, yards per rush and yards per pass allowed.

Consequently, it is difficult to identify a weakness for the Bucs to exploit and, bad news though it is for those who have come to resent Andy Reid’s team, there seems little sign of the Chiefs slowing down just yet.
