This week's NFL TV game predictions

Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles predictions

The Eagles have already secured their playoff place but they have not quite clinched the NFC East title. Victory over the Cowboys on Sunday would get them over the line.

The home team won't be led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, though, as he has been ruled out due to concussion, so former Steelers QB Kenny Pickett is set to start.

The first meeting between the teams was one-sided as the Eagles won 34-6. The Cowboys were already fielding their own back-up QB Cooper Rush at that stage after Dak Prescott was injured, but they have been playing better in recent weeks and are worth taking with a big handicap start.

The Cowboys have beaten the Panthers and Buccaneers as underdogs and while Dallas's star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is set to miss this game, the Eagles are hard to trust as big favourites with Pickett starting against a defence who have been showing more fight of late.

Pickett struggled for much of last week's loss to the Commanders, when the Eagles threw away a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter and their defences allowed Jayden Daniels to throw five touchdown passes.

Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings predictions

There's an appealing game in the NFC North as the 11-4 Packers visit the 13-2 Vikings. Both teams have already secured wildcards, but the Vikings are still fighting with the Lions for the divisional title after winning their last eight games.

The Packers are in good shape , though. Two losses to the Lions are their only defeats in their last 11 games, and they trounced the Saints 34-0 on Monday night. They have scored 30 or more points in their last five games and will be out to prove a point as they are on course to be one of the strongest teams ever to finish third in a division.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell is on track to win the Coach of the Year award and quarterback Sam Darnold has enjoyed a resurgence in Minnesota, leading an offense featuring wide receiver Justin Jefferson that averages 26.4 points per game.

However, the Vikes put a lot of effort into their 27-24 comeback win on the road against the Seahawks and it's no surprise that oddsmakers are finding it hard to separate the sides, but the Packers get the vote as marginal underdogs.

Atlanta Falcons at Washington Commanders predictions

The Falcons and Commanders could both make it into the NFC playoffs after important wins last week. The Falcons are just ahead of the Buccaneers in the NFC South, thanks to their head-to-head tiebreaker, while the Commanders are leading the NFC wildcard standings.

The Falcons received a boost when rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. made his first start last week and looked more accomplished than expected. It was a gentle introduction against the struggling Giants but he showed plenty of poise and good arm strength, while their rushing attack led by Bijan Robinson gained 127 yards.

Washington's Jayden Daniels has been having an impressive rookie season but the Commanders defence regularly allows teams to put up plenty of points. The Atlanta defence is showing improvement and the Falcons are worth backing on the handicap as underdogs.

Phil Agius's Week 17 best bets

Best money line bet

Jacksonville Jaguars
1pt 10-11 general

The last two weeks of the 2024 NFL regular season are set to be a minefield for punters as good teams ease up and resting players and eliminated teams know they have little to gain from winning, while back-up quarterbacks take to the field as far as the eye can see.

The Titans' visit to the Jaguars falls into both of the last two categories as both AFC South teams have been dreadful all season and approach their second meeting with 3-12 records.

The Jaguars won their first encounter 10-6 in Tennessee only three weeks ago and while that was their sole success in their last eight games, they will find it harder to ease off as the home team and the Titans have little incentive to beat them and move behind them in the draft order.

Best handicap bet

Carolina Panthers +8.5
1pt 10-11 Betfair, Paddy Power

The 4-11 Panthers showed they are not tanking with their 36-30 overtime win against Arizona last week and they could prove an annoyance to the Buccaneers, who need to keep winning to make the playoffs.

The Panthers could easily have won the meeting between the teams in Carolina in Week 13, going down 26-23 in overtime after a spirited display, and the Bucs continue to pick up defensive injuries, with safety Antoine Winfield Jr ruled out for this game. The pesky Panthers are worth backing with a big start.

Best points bet

Over 40.5 points in Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants
2pts 20-21 BoyleSports

Two dreadful defences will be on display when the Colts head to MetLife Stadium to face the Giants. While the Giants have been shockingly bad in losing their last ten games and scoring just 32 points over their last three, even they should have some success against a Colts defence that ranks 29th in the league.

With Colts QB Anthony Richardson likely to miss the game, gunslinging back-up Joe Flacco boosts their points-scoring potential while running back Jonathan Taylor is coming off a huge 218-yard and three-TD day against the Titans.

Best prop bet

Brock Bowers over 68.5 receiving yards
1pt 20-23 bet365

There's hot competition for the title of worst game of the week, but the 3-12 Raiders' visit to the 5-10 Saints is another contender. Raiders tight end Brock Bowers has been an oasis of competence on a poor team in his rookie season and can have another big game.

The Saints lost 34-0 to the Packers on Monday and Bowers, who is averaging 71.1 yards per outing and caught 11 passes for 99 yards against the Jaguars last week, could be too much for them to handle.
