This week's NFL TV game predictions

Pittsburgh Steelers at Atlanta Falcons predictions

The Pittsburgh Steelers have never finished a season with a losing record under Mike Tomlin and their head coach worked his magic last year to guide them to the playoffs despite some poor quarterback play.

Even though their offence was tough to watch for large parts of 2023, the Steelers defence bailed them out on numerous occasions.

They fell short in the Wild Card round, losing 31-17 to the Bills, but Tomlin's presence will make them tough to break down once again.

Pittsburgh have built an identity as a fighting team under Tomlin, going 59-35-4 against the spread under his stewardship, and with Russell Wilson at quarterback and Arthur Smith as the offensive coordinator, the Steelers have two men who are battling for their NFL futures.

Atlanta also have a new quarterback and head coach after Smith's departure to Pittsburgh but Kirk Cousins may struggle under centre in his first competitive game since tearing his Achilles.

The Steelers have proved that they relish these encounters and they can stay on the right side of the spread.

Dallas Cowboys at Cleveland Browns predictions predictions

Despite their quarterback troubles, the Cleveland Browns enjoyed a largely successful 2023 campaign and they can begin the new season with a win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Kevin Stefanski's Browns finished second to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North with an 11-6 record, and they achieved that without regular QB Deshaun Watson.

Cleveland's defence proved to be one of the best in the NFL thanks to a rock-solid secondary and a menacing defensive line.

While Watson still has work to do to prove his worth, he has David Njoku, Elijah Moore and Jerry Jeudy at his disposal, while Jerome Ford is explosive in the backfield.

Dallas managed to keep hold of CeeDee Lamb after a contract stand-off but the Cowboys lost Tony Pollard and Tyron Smith in free agency, while DaRon Bland will miss the first few games of the season. Mike McCarthy's men are likely to struggle on the road.

Los Angeles Rams at Detroit Lions predictions

After a tremendous 2023 season, the Detroit Lions will look to prove it was not a one-off, starting with a home clash with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Lions were two quarters away from a Super Bowl appearance last year, eventually falling short to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.

Detroit started with a Wild Card round with a 24-23 win over the Rams in the playoffs and revenge will be on the visitors' minds.

Sean McVay's Rams are well equipped for another playoff push, even without Aaron Donald, but the Lions have arguably the best offensive line in the NFL and they have Terrion Arnold, DJ Reader and Aidan Hutchinson in defence.

The teams look evenly matched heading into the opener but the Rams were beaten only by a point in the last meeting and they have what it takes to cover the handicap once again.

Tom Hill's Week One best bets

Best money line bet

New York Giants
1pt 11-10 general

The Giants won just six games last season but they should make a positive start against a Minnesota team who look set for a year of struggle.

Having lost first-round pick JJ McCarthy to injury, the Vikings will start Sam Darnold at quarterback this season and he has nothing but bad memories of New York, where he had three losing years with the Jets.

They still have Justin Jefferson, but his fellow wide receiver Jordan Addison is unlikely to be 100 per cent fit if he plays and the offence could struggle to gel with so many new faces.

The Giants will look to kick on with fit-again Daniel Jones at quarterback and new wide receiver Malik Nabers set to make his debut.

Best handicap bet

Houston Texans -3
2pts 19-20 Coral, Ladbrokes

The Texans won 23-19 on their last visit to Indianapolis and they can cover the spread once again.

Quarterback CJ Stroud had an incredible rookie campaign, doing more than enough to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, and he now has three elite receivers at his disposal with Stefon Diggs joining Nico Collins and Tank Dell.

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will play his first competitive game since Week Four last season and he is bound to be rusty against an improving defence.

Best points bet

Under 41.5 points in Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints
1pt 10-11 general

Two NFC South rivals meet on the opening weekend and it may not be one for the neutral.

Carolina won only two games last year and have turned to Dave Canales as their new head coach while the Saints have a new offensive coordinator at the helm in Klint Kubiak, who will be tasked with improving an offense which often flattered to deceive last term.

The last seven meetings between these divisional rivals all featured fewer than 42 points and this Week One meeting could follow suit.

Best prop bet

Dalton Kincaid over 51.5 receiving yards in Arizona Cardinals at Buffalo Bills
2pts 10-11 bet365

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has lost his favourite target in Diggs in 2024 but he can still rely on his tight end Kincaid.

A rookie last year, Kincaid finished with 673 yards from 73 receptions and surpassed 50 yards in a game six times last season despite Diggs garnering more attention.

Allen will want to stick with his trusted tight end in this season opener and Kincaid should get into a rhythm nice and early.
