The Kansas City Chiefs are in the Super Bowl... AGAIN! It's the fifth appearance in the NFL's end-of-season spectacular in the last six seasons and they are aiming to become the first team ever to win three successive Super Bowls.

The last three Super Bowls have each been settled by just three points and another close contest is expected in New Orleans on Sunday, February 9, with Andy Reid's team marginally favoured to win another championship.

The Philadelphia Eagles are reopposing the Chiefs just two years after losing to the AFC juggernauts in Super Bowl LVII, so let's take a look at the four Super Bowl appearances of the Chiefs in the Reid-Mahomes era.

Super Bowl LIV: Kansas City Chiefs 31 San Francisco 49ers 20

Chiefs touchdowns: Patrick Mahomes run, Travis Kelce reception, Damien Williams reception, Williams run; Chiefs field goal: Harrison Butker.

Handicap: Chiefs -1.5 (favourite covered); Total points: 53 (under); Half-time score: 10-10; MVPMahomes.

The Chiefs won their first Super Bowl since 1970 by beating the 49ers in Miami in February 2020.

Having led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game in his first full season as starter the previous year, Patrick Mahomes went all the way this time. It wasn't a perfect performance by any means as he was intercepted twice, but with Tyreek Hill catching nine passes for 105 yards and Damien Williams racking up triple-figures on the ground, a new era of NFL success had begun.

Super Bowl LV: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31 Kansas City Chiefs 9

Chiefs field goals: Butker 3.

Handicap: Chiefs -3 (underdog covered); Total points: 56.5 (under); Half-time score: 21-6. MVPBrady.

Tom Brady celebrated an historic success in Super Bowl LV, winning with the Buccaneers after six successes with the Patriots, but the veteran quarterback was not the key factor in the game.

The Buccaneers dominated on the lines of scrimmage, particularly defensively as they overpowered an injury-hit Chiefs offensive line who could simply get nothing done.

Mahomes had 270 passing yards but was intercepted twice while the 43-year-old Brady posted only 201 yards but threw three touchdown passes.

Super Bowl LVII: Kansas City Chiefs 38 Philadelphia Eagles 35

Chiefs touchdowns: Kelce reception, Nick Bolton fumble recovery, Isiah Pacheco run, Kadarius Toney reception, Skyy Moore reception; Chiefs field goal: Butker.
Eagles touchdowns: Hurts run 3, AJ Brown reception; Eagles field goals: Jake Elliott 2.

Handicap: Eagles -1.5 (underdog covered); Total points: 51.5 (over); Half-time score: 14-24. MVPMahomes.

The Chiefs missed Super Bowl LVI after losing to the Bengals in the AFC Championship game but they were back on top the following season in the same match-up as this year's game against the Eagles. It was a ding-dong battle, with the Eagles taking the lead three times in the first half, but the Chiefs poured it on in the second half.

They finally got in front in the fourth quarter and sealed victory with a Harrison Butker field goal with eight seconds left. Mahomes threw three touchdown passes but had only 182 passing yards. Hurts stole the show on the stats sheet with his four total touchdowns and 70 rushing yards, while DeVonta Smith had 100 receiving yards.

Super Bowl LVIII: Kansas City Chiefs 25 San Francisco 49ers 22 (OT)

Chiefs touchdowns: Marquez Valdes-Scantling reception, Mecole Hardman reception; Chiefs field goals: Butker 4.

Handicap: 49ers -1.5 (underdog covered); Total points: 47.5 (under); Half-time score: 3-10. End-of-regulation score: 19-19. MVPMahomes.

Super Bowl viewers got almost 25 per cent extra free last year as the Chiefs' third win in the recent era was secured with just three seconds remaining in the first period of overtime. The Chiefs had been on the back foot against the 49ers, trailing 10-0 in the first quarter, 19-16 late in the fourth quarter and 22-19 in overtime, but came through when it mattered most again.

Mahomes passed for 333 yards and two touchdowns, with Kelce leading the way on 93 receiving yards in Las Vegas.
