Edinson Cavani at the double as Uruguay reach quarter-finals
Portugal knocked out
Uruguay 2
Cavani 7, 62
Portugal 1
Pepe 55
Three things we learned...
1Cavani key man in Uruguay double act
Edinson Cavani was Uruguay's match-winner in the 2-1 victory over Portugal and anyone who has backed the South Americans will be desperate for news on his leg injury after he was substituted with 16 minutes of the pulsating encounter remaining.
Cavani has shown himself to be even more important than partner Luis Suarez in this tournament and not just with his double against Portugal which included a classy finish to decide the tie. He was also vastly superior in the opening win over Egypt.
Replacement Cristhian Stuani is nowhere near the level of Cavani so it's fingers crossed that the Paris St-Germain hitman can recover to face France in Friday's quarter-final.
2Torreira would be a top signing for Arsenal
There were committed performances all over the pitch from a determined Uruguay side and Lucas Torreira was one of those who left everything on the pitch.
The tigerish Torreira has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and he would be a definite improvement on what the Gunners currently have in midfield. Torreira is strong in the tackle but can also use the ball nicely when required.
3Portugal approach needs a tinker
It's difficult to be too negative about a side who won the last European Championship but short-term results cannot dictate long-term success and Portugal got caught out at this World Cup.
Their only win came against Morocco in slightly fortunate circumstances and let's not forget that at Euro 2016 they triumphed in 90 minutes just once.
They need to get Bernardo Silva into a more central position and, however difficult it is, try to have a plan other than giving the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo.
