Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers predictions

A late-season Monday night showdown between the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers must have looked like a real gem when the NFL schedulers came up with it, but the Week 17 encounter does not possess the lustre or importance that was expected when the fixture list was compiled.

Fans still have a rematch of last season's NFC Championship game to enjoy, but with the 6-9 49ers bottom of the NFC West, the 13-2 Lions are the only team with a chance to appear in that fixture this term.

Bookmakers are still showing plenty of respect to San Francisco but they have rarely looked like the team they were last year.

Kyle Shanahan's side have lost five of their last six games and their Week 16 defeat in Miami was typical of their season. It was a close contest but the Niners struggled in the second half and gained only 81 yards on the ground as multiple injuries hit them hard. 

Left tackle Trent Williams has been ruled out of the final two games of the season for a team who have covered the handicap just once in their last seven contests.

The Lions had their 11-game winning streak broken by the Bills in a 48-42 thriller in Week 15 but they took out their frustrations on the Bears last week in a comprehensive 34-17 road win. 

Dan Campbell's team are still facing competition to be the number one seed in the NFC, but they can't afford to look ahead to next week's potentially huge showdown with the Vikings and their feisty head coach is unlikely to let that happen. 

Despite fighting a host of defensive injuries and the recent loss of running back David Montgomery to a knee injury, Detroit have the motivation and the talent to avenge last year's Championship game loss and cover the handicap on the road.
