Baltimore Ravens at Kansas City Chiefs predictions

The new NFL season kicks off with a fantastic confrontation between Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens, who are first and third in the Super Bowl market.

It's a chance for the Ravens to gain revenge for last season's 17-10 home defeat in the teams' AFC Championship showdown, but they have lost several notable players.

Baltimore’s offensive line is without three 2023 starters in Kevin Zeitler, John Simpson and Morgan Moses, but there have been even bigger changes on the defensive side of the ball. Highly-rated defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald has earned a head-coaching job with Seattle and they have lost key players at each level of their defence with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, linebacker Patrick Queen and safety Geno Stone all leaving.

Their headline signing was running back Derrick Henry, but there's a question over how much the former Titan has left in the tank at the age of 30.

The Chiefs were able to raise their game when it mattered last season and they powered past the Ravens to reach the Super Bowl even though they were 4.5-point underdogs for that match. Andy Reid's team have lost cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and linebacker Willie Gay, but there is still plenty of young talent on their defence.

Rookie receiver Xavier Worthy gives QB Patrick Mahomes has another speedy option on offence and tight end Travis Kelce is available form the off this season after missing last season's opening-night defeat to the Lions due to injury.

The Chiefs won't want to have their party spoiled for a second successive year and they have generally made fast starts under Reid, winning nine of 11 openers and covering the handicap in seven of them.

The noisy Kansas City crowd should have plenty to cheer and their team should get the better of the new-look Ravens and cover the handicap.
