Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles predictions

The Philadelphia Eagles are aiming to put last season's huge slump behind them and having made a positive start by beating the Packers in a high-profile Week One game, they can move to 2-0 for the season with a home victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Philadelphia won ten of their first 11 games last year but then lost six of their last seven, including a tame playoff loss to Tampa Bay. They came out strongly in this year, however, with a 34-29 victory over the Packers in the first NFL game played in Brazil, which should have the home fans back on their side at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday night.

In contrast, the Falcons fell some way short of pre-season  expectations in their first outing. New head coach Raheem Morris and veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins had been expected to spark a revival in Atlanta but things didn’t go to plan as they lost 18-10 at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who didn't even need to score a touchdown to beat them.

The Steelers defence, led by TJ Watt, allowed the Falcons only 155 yards through the air and forced two interceptions. Cousins was made to look like a rookie and lacked chemistry with his talented young receivers.

It may not be much different for the Falcons this week as the Eagles looked really strong in their opener. They have made a shrewd acquisition in signing running back Saquon Barkley, who scored three touchdowns on his debut, and while the Eagles’ defence gave up plenty of points, they made some big plays when it mattered most and Packers QB Jordan Love could complete only half of his 34 pass attempts.

A talented Eagles offence led by quarterback Jalen Hurts should be capable of scoring enough to record a clear-cut win over a Falcons team who have plenty of work still to do to reach their potential.
