United States Grand Prix predictions
The run-in of the 2024 F1 world championship begins with the United States Grand Prix this weekend, the first of four consecutive races in the Americas, with Mexico, Brazil and Las Vegas next on the schedule.
There are only six rounds left and world champion Max Verstappen leads the championship by 52 points despite going eight races without a win.
McLaren's Lando Norris has more chances than that to gain ground, though, as three of the remaining weekends include sprint races, starting with the showdown in Texas as the action resumes after a three-week break.
Norris secured his second win in the last four races in Singapore last time out but needs to dominate from now on. He can make a positive start by claiming back-to-back wins for the first time in his career in Austin.
The British driver's breakthrough win came in a sprint-race weekend in America in May, when he won the Miami Grand Prix, and his team have continued to raise their game throughout the season, with four wins in the last six races to lead the team standings by 41 points.
Norris was boosted by an upgrade package in that Florida race, and this time Verstappen will hope Red Bull have used the break wisely to solve the balance issues that have dogged his car since the middle of the season. The Dutch driver did well to be runner-up in Singapore, which had been a weak track for him in 2023, and could be more competitive this week but McLaren should hold the edge.
Norris was second in qualifying and the race at the Circuit of the Americas last season, but approaches the weekend as the man to beat this time.
McLaren will also hope Oscar Piastri can take points off Verstappen but the Australian is expected to give way to his team-mate if they are running in the first two places. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc could also be set for a strong weekend as the Italian team chase Red Bull for second place in the constructors standings.
Alex Albon of Williams has a decent chance of collecting another points finish for his improving team after finishing ninth in Italy and seventh in Azerbaijan. The Thai driver was ninth in this race last season and finished fifth in Austin for Red Bull in 2019.
