Singapore Grand Prix qualifying predictions
Last week in Azerbaijan we were treated to a tremendous duel between Ferrari and McLaren and a repeat could be on the cards around a very different street circuit in the Singapore Grand Prix.
It’s difficult to draw too many solid conclusions from the opening day’s practice as the teams pursued very different tyre strategies.
However, there was very little to separate the resurgent Charles Leclerc and championship chaser Lando Norris in either session.
Championship leader Max Verstappen’s Red Bull team seemed to be struggling, as they were last year at Marina Bay.
Mercedes, who went into the summer break as the team to beat, were also all at sea. Lewis Hamilton said he will be surprised if he qualifies in the top ten, while George Russell ended his day the same way he ended his race last year – in the wall.
A straight fight between Ferrari star Leclerc and McLaren maestro Norris looks the most likely scenario for qualifying, and that is reflected in the prices.
Ferrari traditionally go well in Singapore, while Leclerc is fresh from taking pole position in Baku for the fourth year running. However, Norris was seeking his third pole in a row in that race, only to be eliminated in the first part of qualifying when an incident ahead of him prevented him from improving his lap time.
Norris has started from pole in four of the last eight races and the car is clearly working just as well at this circuit as it has at most others, so the Briton is slightly preferred.
