Mexico City Grand Prix predictions
While all the attention has been on McLaren's Lando Norris attempting to catch world championship leader Max Verstappen, the British driver is much closer to third-placed Charles Leclerc in the standings and could see his position further weakened in Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix.
Leclerc's victory in the United States Grand Prix last week has taken him to within 22 points of Norris, who was placed fourth in Austin after being handed a controversial five-second penalty when overtaking world champion Verstappen late in the race.
The Ferraris of Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. were both more than ten seconds clear of the gripping battle between the top two in the championship and could continue their improved form in Mexico.
While it hasn't been the best few years for the Italian team, they have produced some solid showings in this event. They finished third and fourth in 2017, second and third in 2018, second and fourth in 2019, fifth and six in both 2021 and 2022 and then third and fourth in last year's race after taking first and second in qualifying.
With their car now in regular contention for race victories, Leclerc has a great chance to secure back-to-back wins for only the second time in his F1 career.
Verstappen has won five of the last six races in Mexico and bounced back to form after a quiet spell with victory in the sprint race last week, but he has not won any of the last nine grands prix after taking seven of the first ten this season.
Having arrested their slide, Red Bull should be confident of steering Verstappen to a fourth world title over the final five races of the season, but Leclerc could prove their biggest threat this weekend after finishing on the podium at five of the last six races and winning two of them.
Liam Lawson made an impressive return to the F1 field as he replaced Daniel Ricciardo in the RB team and finished ninth in his comeback race in Texas.
The New Zealander finished ahead of more experienced teammate Yuki Tsunoda as he bids to secure a drive for next season and the team have gone well in Mexico previously.
Ricciardo qualified fourth and finished seventh for the team – then known as Alpha Tauri – last year, while Pierre Gasly qualified fifth and finished fourth there in 2021.
