Las Vegas Grand Prix predictions

Max Verstappen gets his first chance to wrap up a fourth world drivers’ championship at this weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix – but the celebrations may have to be put on ice.

After a performance worthy of a multiple champion in torrential conditions in Brazil last time, Verstappen leads McLaren’s Lando Norris in the standings by 62 points with three races remaining.

If the Red Bull star leaves Las Vegas with at least a 60-point advantage he will claim the crown, however McLaren’s form suggests that Norris can keep a sliver of hope alive.

McLaren had dominated the Sprint in Sao Paulo before the rain arrived, and Norris has been the man to catch recently with five pole positions in the last seven races.

However, while the Bristolian scored wide-margin wins in the Netherlands and Singapore, he has often let himself down with poor starts and mistakes.

Norris’s dwindling title charge would be in even worse shape had his teammate Oscar Piastri not allowed him past in both the Sprint and main race in Brazil, and the young Aussie could be the man to follow this weekend.

Piastri may be asked to move aside for Norris again, but only if they are together on the track, and with the pressure off, Piastri may be able to show the sort of form that has brought him two wins and four second-places this season.

Verstappen and the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are certainly capable of getting into the mix while Piastri’s fellow antipodean Liam Lawson makes his fourth start of the season for RB.

The New Zealander finished ninth on his return in Texas despite starting 19th after a grid penalty, and he matched that result in extremely challenging conditions at Interlagos last time.

Lawson is clearly a star of the future and has been linked with the second Red Bull seat alongside Verstappen. He looks overpriced to add to his tally in Las Vegas.
