Abu Dhabi Grand Prix predictions
Consolation prizes should be the order of the day as the 2024 F1 season comes to a close with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
McLaren bosses won't necessarily see the constructors' title in that light and they will be delighted if they can can convert their 21-point lead over Ferrari into their first team championship win since the days of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard in 1998.
Everything is set up perfectly for that to happen, as they have locked out the front row of the grid with Lando Norris on pole and Oscar Piastri alongside him. On top of that, while Carlos Sainz Jr. is a threat for Ferrari in third on the grid in his final race for the Italian team, Charles Leclerc will start on the back row of the grid.
The Monegasque driver trails Norris by only eight points in the race to be runner-up to Max Verstappen, but he has had a tough weekend with a bout of food poisoning followed by the hammer blow of getting a ten-place grid penalty for exceeding the number of battery parts used over the season.
That meant the best he could have been on the grid was 11th, and at times during qualifying it looked like that might be possible. But he had his best lap in Q2 deleted for exceeding track limits and was placed only 14th, which means he will start 19th with only the also-penalised Franco Colapinto behind him.
Leclerc will not be the only fast driver looking to come through the field as Lewis Hamilton is 16th, but it looks likely that some kind of race-altering safety-car period or penalty such as the one Norris received in Qatar last week would be required to provide a late twist in either the battles for the team title or second place in the drivers championship.
Norris has converted only two of his seven pole positions into wins this season but should have a good chance of signing off on the top step of the podium if he can drive a clean race. He is difficult to trust at odds-on prices with Sainz and Verstappen on the premises, though, and backing Piastri to win the race without Norris at odds-against is preferred.
The Australian has been closer to the pace of his teammate for most of the weekend, posting the fastest time of all in the third practice session, and the winner in Hungary and Azerbaijan this season looks to have the car to deliver another strong result.
Haas provided one of the best stories of qualifying with Nico Hulkenberg claiming an excellent fourth place. His teammate Kevin Magnussen is down in 14th on the grid after a costly mistake in Q1 but should have the pace to work his way into the points in his final outing for the team.
The Danish driver has finished in the top ten in two of his last three races as his team have found some pace late in the season.
