Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Grand Prix predictions

Hunt v Lauda, Hakkinen v Schumacher, Hamilton v Massa.

McLaren and Ferrari have been battling each other throughout Formula 1 history, and while none of their drivers are in contention for individual honours this season, the pair's battle for the constructors' championship will be decided in this weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 24th and final race of the season.

Max Verstappen, with an 80-point lead, has long since secured his fourth straight drivers' crown, but his Red Bull team are no longer in the reckoning for the teams' title.

McLaren have the advantage heading into the showdown 21 points clear of Ferrari, meaning third and fourth for the papaya cars in Sunday's race would be enough no matter what Ferrari do.

However, the Yas Marina circuit, featuring largely short corners and long straights, is likely to suit the Scuderia, certainly better than the twisting Qatar track did last week.

Ferrari were able to close the points gap in Lusail, although that was mostly thanks to Lando Norris being heavily penalised for ignoring a warning flag. Norris had been chasing Verstappen hard for the victory, but ended up tenth, with an extra consolation point for the fastest lap.

However, that is far from the first time McLaren have failed to bring home the result they were capable of, and Oscar Piastri's third place last week is the only podium they have achieved in the last three races.

Since the mini-break prior to the race in Texas, Ferrari have been on a charge.

They struggled in the heavy rain in Brazil, while Qatar was never expected to suit, but they scored a 1-2 finish in Austin, first and third in Mexico, and third and fourth in Las Vegas, where Mercedes mystified even themselves by dominating the whole weekend.

Ferrari will likely need to win and gain a strong result with the second car to stand a chance of overhauling McLaren for the title, but they have been the more dependable outfit recently and should be very competitive at the circuit.

McLaren have not won the constructors' crown since 1998, while Ferrari's most recent was in 2008, and the Scuderia look worth a punt at the prices to end their drought this weekend.
