British Grand Prix preview

The World Championship series returns following a seven-week break with the British Grand Prix in Cardiff.

For British fans and non-Polish riders, it’s viewed as the biggest and most prestigious event on the calendar, and home hero Tai Woffinden has rock-solid claims of reaching the podium.

Woffinden occupies sixth in the standings following a sub-standard start to the campaign but his recent upturn in domestic form catches the eye and he could be in for a fruitful second half of the season.

The triple world champion was outstanding for Great Britain in the Speedway of Nations semi-final last week and 14, 15 and 18-point hauls for Wroclaw in the Polish league during this past month suggests he’s gradually returning to peak form.

He’s yet to top the rostrum around the Principality Stadium but filled the runner-up berth in 2014, 2016 and 2018 and his vast experience around this unique venue gives him the edge over many of his competitors.

Two Grand Prix wins in Warsaw - an almost identical circuit in terms of size and shape to Cardiff - further highlight his liking for temporary tracks.

Woffinden looks worthy of an each-way wager at 8-1 with a partisan 45,000-strong crowd spurring him on.

There is further British interest with Robert Lambert, Dan Bewley and wildcard Adam Ellis all in action.

Ellis will probably find the competition too hot at this stage of his career, and while semi-final appearances look possible for Lambert and Bewley, a lack of know-how on tight one-day tracks may count against them.

In-form duo Bartosz Zmarzlik and Leon Madsen boast superb records on temporary circuits and are likely to feature prominently.
