Cheyenne Woods opts out of Moon Valley Classic golf as players battle heavy rain
Anna Nordqvist enjoys successful opening day in soggy Phoenix
Cheyenne Woods, one of the two Racing Post Sport recommendations for the Moon Valley Classic, was a non-runner, so stakes should be returned, with only 28 players eventually teeing off for the Cactus Tour event.
The gathering in Phoenix overcame coronavirus concerns by going ahead, but Woods was not among those who opted to take part. Mina Harigae set the early pace on a rain-softened track with a first-round 66, with Lisa Pettersson needing one shot more to get round Moon Valley Country Club.
Anna Nordqvist, the headline Racing Post Sport selection, is tied for second place going into day two – five under par with two holes of her opening round to play. Bad weather delayed the start of play, so the Swede could not get finished.
The three-round event should be completed on Friday, with better weather expected for the final two rounds.
