Steve Palmer's Sanderson Farms Championship preview

Keith Mitchell heads the betting for a low-grade Sanderson Farms Championship, but the 32-year-old has won only once on the PGA Tour and is easily overlooked.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Nick Dunlap 30-1

Two-time PGA Tour champion Nick Dunlap should arguably be favourite for the Sanderson Farms Championship – and the 20-year-old sensation can rip the Country Club of Jackson apart over the next four days.

Dunlap won The American Express when he was still an amateur in January. The best amateur in the world swaggered into California and carded a third-round 60, taking the PGA Tour by storm. His second triumph came in the Barracuda Championship in July.

Dunlap would have made it to the Tour Championship had his AmEx success earned him FedEx Cup points, but because he was a non-member at the time, no points were given. Despite that unfortunate technicality, he nearly qualified for East Lake, finishing fifth in the FedEx St Jude Championship in the first leg of the playoffs, then 31st in the BMW Championship.

Dunlap was born in Alabama, went to college there and still lives there, so he is teeing up close to home this week. He has hopped over the west border to Mississippi as the highest-ranked player in the Sanderson Farms field.

Next best bet

Stephan Jaeger 40-1

German ace Stephan Jaeger repelled Scottie Scheffler to claim a maiden PGA Tour title in the Houston Open in May. Jaeger has won six times on the Korn Ferry Tour and one of those victories came in Tennessee, which borders Mississippi. He went to college in Tennessee and still lives there, so will relish teeing up close to home this week.

Jaeger has a solid record at CC of Jackson and returns there as a PGA Tour champion for the first time. He has been steady of late in much better grades than this week's humdrum gathering.

Other selections

Cameron Champ 55-1
Taylor Moore 45-1
Davis Riley 110-1

Cameron Champ is a three-time PGA Tour champion who is well up to winning in this grade. The Texas-based Californian is inconsistent, but a world-beater on his day, and a cut above most of those in the field in Jackson. He won the Sanderson Farms by four shots on his debut in 2018, then was ninth last year despite arriving in dire form.

Champ has shown enough lately to deserve a place in the staking plan. He was 12th in the 3M Open at the end of July. He missed the cut by a shot in the Procore Championship last time out despite carding an eagle and seven birdies and driving superbly. Some sloppy chipping cost him dearly, but he should be pounding greens at a happy hunting ground this week.

Taylor Moore, a Texan who went to college across the Mississippi border in Arkansas, is extremely comfortable competing in the Deep South. He won on the Canadian Tour in 2016, the Korn Ferry Tour in 2021, then the PGA Tour last year, making his breakthrough in the Valspar Championship.

Moore, second in the Houston Open this year, can be proud of his Major efforts, finishing 20th in the Masters and 12th in the US PGA. More recently he has finished tenth in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and 12th in the 3M Open. His Sanderson Farms record is solid.

Complete the attack with Davis Riley, who is teeing up in an event he calls his “fifth Major”. The Mississippi man won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2020, then a PGA Tour pairs event (Zurich Classic) alongside Nick Hardy last year, before a five-shot success in the Charles Schwab Challenge in May. Riley is loaded with talent and well capable of contending at a juicy price.

Course guide for the Sanderson Farms Championship

  • Length 7,461 yards
  • Par 72 – four par-fives, ten par-fours, four par-threes

  • Course records - 72 holes 266 Sam Burns (2021) 18 holes 62 Roberto Castro (2015)
  • Course winners taking part Peter Malnati, Cody Gribble, Ryan Armour, Cameron Champ, Mackenzie Hughes, Luke List
  • When to bet By 1.05pm on Thursday
  • When to watch Live on Sky Sports Golf from 5pm Thursday
  • Time difference Mississippi is six hours behind the UK and Ireland
  • Course type Parkland
  • Course overview Country Club of Jackson made its PGA Tour debut in 2014. The most prestigious events held previously were the Mississippi State Amateur and the Southern Junior. Country Club of Jackson, tree-lined and traditional, has one par-five which is comfortably reachable in two shots (the third), but the other three (the fifth, 11th and 14th) are long and relatively difficult. Slick greens are a strength of Jackson, with Champions UltraDwarf Bermuda grass making for immaculate putting surfaces, with tight lies around them. Scoring has been low, though, with the winning score between 16 and 22 under par every year
  • Story of last year Luke List emerged triumphant from a five-man playoff which included Ludvig Aberg, holing a long birdie putt on the first extra hole
  • Weather forecast Sunny, warm and calm, with temperatures peaking at 30C
  • Type of player suited to the challenge Ryan Armour and Cameron Champ – back-to-back winners in 2017 and 2018 – have completely contrasting golfing profiles. There is clearly more than one way to skin this cat, but eight of the ten Sanderson Farms champions finished in the top ten for greens in regulation, so that seems the most important statistic
