Steve Palmer's Black Desert Championship preview

The inaugural Black Desert Championship appears a wide-open affair at a course which has been open for just over a year. Keith Mitchell, who blew a golden winning chance in the Sanderson Farms Championship on Sunday, tops the PGA Tour betting for the second consecutive week.

Mitchell, a one-time Tour champion at the age of 32, appears poor value again. Kevin Yu, who beat Mitchell on Sunday, opted to withdraw from the Black Desert Championship on Monday afternoon.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Michael Thorbjornsen 40-1

Last week's Sanderson Farms Championship saw a return to form from Michael Thorbjornsen, who fired rounds of 63, 69, 69, 68 for eighth place, and this former amateur superstar looks ready to contend for a maiden PGA Tour title this week.

Thorbjornsen topped the PGA Tour University Rankings to earn a card – the same route Ludvig Aberg took – and it seems only a matter of time before the 23-year-old slugger makes a serious impact.

Thorbjornsen turned professional in June, then finished second in the John Deere Classic in July. This week's assignment should be a similarly low-scoring affair to the JDC. Two years ago he finished fourth in the Travelers Championship to showcase his promise.

If last week was a sign that Thorbjornsen has settled into life as a PGA Tour pro, he can be expected to go from strength to strength in the months to come.

Next best bet

Patrick Fishburn 28-1

Utah man Patrick Fishburn is playing a home game this week and teeing up in fantastic fettle. From the Myrtle Beach Classic in the middle of May onwards, Fishburn has been on fire, posting six top-20s, including third place in the Barracuda Championship, sixth in the 3M Open and third in the Procore Championship last month.

Fishburn has won on the Canadian Tour and is threatening a PGA Tour breakthrough at the age of 32. This appears the best chance he has ever had.

Other selections

Chan Kim 33-1
Patton Kizzire 50-1
Matt McCarty 50-1
Kyoung-Hoon Lee 80-1

Another attacking player well suited to this assignment is Chan Kim, who went to college in Arizona, just south of Utah, and still lives there. Kim enjoyed success as an amateur in Arizona before winning eight times on the Japan Tour, then last year he won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour.

The last of Kim's KFT wins was in Idaho, which borders Utah, and he is clearly comfortable in that part of the States. Five of Kim's last seven starts have yielded a top-30 finish, including 12th spot in the John Deere, tenth in the ISCO Championship and 12th in the Wyndham.

Patton Kizzire won his third PGA Tour title in the Procore Championship a month ago – a five-shot romp – then followed up with 11th place in the Sanderson Farms. Seven of his last 12 starts have resulted in a top-25 finish. His maiden Korn Ferry Tour title came in the 2015 Utah Championship and he has returned to the Beehive State in vibrant mood.

Matt McCarty, who has won three times on the KFT this season, made his first start as a PGA Tour member to much fanfare last week. He was tailed off over the weekend but should be more settled for Black Desert. He was born in Arizona and still lives there so is teeing up relatively close to home. His last KFT win came in Idaho and he was second in the Utah Championship in August.

Complete the attack with Kyoung-Hoon Lee, who played in the 2022 Presidents Cup and was probably watching that event last month feeling disappointed that he failed to make the Internationals team. Ninth place in the 3M Open in July was a return to form, then 23rd spot in the Sanderson Farms last week was also encouraging.

Lee's two PGA Tour titles both came in the AT&T Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch, which is a low-scoring venue designed by Tom Weiskopf. Black Desert also fits that description and Lee may fall in love with the layout.

The flat track is visually striking, with the black of lava rock alongside blue water and sky, white sand bunkers and pristine green grass. The fifth and 14th holes are short par-fours, a feature of Weiskopf designs, which will tempt the bigger hitters to drive the green. The par-three 17th is a spin-off of the famous Postage Stamp at Royal Troon, where Weiskopf won the Open in 1973. The greens are large and bentgrass
  • Weather forecast Sunny, hot and calm, with temperatures peaking at 33C
  • Type of player suited to the challenge This open, desert layout encourages big-hitters to open their shoulders. Attacking players scrambling well should emerge on the leaderboard
