Steve Palmer's LIV Golf Adelaide preview
The highlight of the LIV Golf season starts in the early hours of Friday morning in the UK and Ireland, with hordes of Australians cramming into Grange GC for the annual LIV Adelaide party. This is by far the best-attended LIV event, with an atmosphere rivalling the PGA Tour's Phoenix Open.
There is plenty of evidence to suggest Jon Rahm is uncomfortable with the LIV vibe and the particularly raucous galleries Down Under should test the Spaniard's fiery temperament. Rahm – and the rest of the top four in the betting – can be left well alone.
Tyrrell Hatton, who finished 14th on his LIV Adelaide debut last year, suffered a dent to his putting confidence by squandering countless birdie chances down the stretch at LIV Riyadh on Saturday. Joaquin Niemann struggled home in 33rd place in Riyadh, while Bryson DeChambeau seems unlikely to build on humdrum Adelaide results of 26th and 27th as Grange does not play to his strengths.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Cameron Smith 14-1
More than 100,000 golf fans are expected through the gates this week, with the vast majority there to cheer on the Australian contingent in the field, and the galleries play more of a role in this event than any other on the LIV calendar.
The impact of an Australian golfing crowd was shown to great effect in the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne, where the locals made life tough for the visiting Americans, and again in last year's LIV Adelaide. Ripper GC, the all-Aussie side, were given huge encouragement by the locals as they contested a playoff for the team title against the South Africans of Stinger GC.
If an Australian gets into contention this week, he can be certain the galleries will be doing everything in their power to support him, as well as giving non-Aussie rivals a far less welcoming experience. It is an environment which can help Cameron Smith pick up a fourth LIV title.
The Aussies are the most motivated players in the field this week, as well as the best suited to the conditions at this typically firm, fast-running Australian layout. It puts a premium on short-game class, something Smith has always carried in abundance.
Smith has finished third and 14th in the two previous editions of LIV Adelaide. His last four starts in Australia – at the end of last year – have yielded form figures of 3-2-2-39. His final start of 2024 was a playoff defeat in the Saudi International, then he made his first appearance of 2025 with 25th spot in LIV Riyadh last week.
With the rust shed in Riyadh, expect a sharper performance at a more suitable venue this week. The former Open champion and world number two can handle the big occasion.
Next best bet
Lucas Herbert 25-1
Smith is a three-time Australian PGA Championship winner who relishes a home crowd, while Lucas Herbert enjoyed his first victory on home turf in the New South Wales Open in November last year. That three-shot success may be followed by a maiden LIV title for the Victoria-born 29-year-old.
Herbert, who finished fifth in the Australian Open in December, was 14th on his LIV Adelaide debut last year. He is a three-time champion on the DP World Tour and a one-time winner on the PGA Tour, so has proved his bottle. Herbert's short-game is typically excellent and he plays well in the wind. The forecast for two breezy days at the Grange will appeal to both Smith and Herbert.
Fourth place in LIV Riyadh last week was an encouraging warm-up spin for Herbert, who can contribute to a Ripper-dominated leaderboard at the Grange.
