LIV Golf Tour Team Championship preview

The curtain comes down on the third LIV Golf season with this week's Tour Team Championship in Dallas and individual winner Jon Rahm, who leads second seeds Legion XIII, would love another cash bonanza after securing first prize on his debut season in Chicago last week.

The fact teammate that Tyrrell Hatton has also flourished, finishing fourth in his maiden campaign, suggests they are on to a good thing.

But it is a four-man event this week and all players will have to contribute in singles, foursomes and in a Sunday strokeplay to be successful. That means fellow members Caleb Surrett and Kieran Vincent, whose performances have seen him relegated this year, will have to do more than merely chip in.

Legion XIII will not be in action until the second day of competition on Saturday, having received a bye to the semi-finals alongside top seeds and holders Crushers and the all-Australian quarter that make up Rippers.

Crushers are led by Bryson DeChambeau and finished in the top three in seven of the 13 tournaments, winning three including at last week's gathering in Chicago, so it is easy to see why they are regarded as favourites.

However, this is a stage that may not suit the big-hitting boffin's gung-ho approach as there seems to be danger - mainly water - lurking at every corner at Maridoe.

Firms are offering each-way returns for teams finishing in the top two spots so there looks to be some value in backing Smash, captained by Brooks Koepka.

His calm leadership could be just the ticket for the team who would have got a lot closer to the three seeded spots had they not been disqualified at Nashville when Graeme McDowell failed a drugs test after taking a banned nasal decongestant.

They finished third that week and also claimed the team prize at the recent tournament at Greenbrier, so they could definitely come to the party and last year's individual winner Talor Gooch will be keen to perform after finishing in tenth last time.

They look to have a strong all-round team and could make their presence felt in the shake-up.

Format

The tournament will consist of 13 four-player teams battling it out for glory. Three teams are seeded after the regular season – Crushers, Legion XIII and Ripper – and will go straight through to Saturday's semi-finals.

The teams ranked fourth to 13th will be paired up with the captain of the highest-ranked team, Smash's Brooks Koepka, able to pick his team's opponents. This is followed by the next highest-ranked team until the line-up is complete. The teams will fight it out in matches which will involve two singles and one foursomes.

The five winners and the three top-seeded teams will play on Saturday in the same format – this time with Bryson DeChambeau of the Crushers getting the first pick – before the 16 members of the four winning teams will play an 18-hole strokeplay event on Sunday to decide the winner with the team with the lowest finishing total triumphing.
