Steve Palmer's Mauritius Open preview
The golfing year will reach a conclusion just three days before Christmas presents are being opened the world over as the Mauritius Open brings the curtain down on a memorable 12 months. Antoine Rozner is clear favourite at the track where he won the tournament two years ago.
Rozner is the highest-ranked player in the field and has been contending in much better events than this one in recent weeks, but the Frenchman has spells of poor putting and makes no appeal at such short odds. He is a three-time DP World Tour champion, but is winless since his Mauritius success and is difficult to trust under pressure.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Casey Jarvis 25-1
South African youngster Casey Jarvis and his backers had a rollercoaster ride of emotions in last week's Alfred Dunhill Championship - his eventual share of 11th place does not tell the full story - and another tournament in the thick of things can be expected in Mauritius.
Jarvis made two eagles and 23 birdies in the Alfred Dunhill, but finished the event on nine under par. He was three over par through just two holes, but opened with a 65, then was looking the likely champion until a triple-bogey six at the 16th hole in round two. Well in the hunt on Sunday after a solid start, a quadruple-bogey seven at the seventh hole effectively ended his challenge. The 21-year-old had showcased his enormous talent, but two disasters at par-threes destroyed his scorecard.
Expect Jarvis to contend again this week. He was fifth at the halfway stage of the only previous Mauritius Open at Mont Choisy, despite entering the event ranked 776th in the world. A difficult weekend meant the teenager dropped to 40th place, but he should be more of a threat with two more years of experience under his belt. He won on the Challenge Tour last year and is a DP World Tour member who can approach this week's assignment bursting with confidence.
Next best bet
Christo Lamprecht 60-1
Another powerful young South African with the tools to dominate Mont Choisy is Christo Lamprecht. The five par-fives and two driveable par-fours look at the mercy of this 6ft 8ins beast. He is a former world number one amateur who won the Amateur Championship last year before finishing as low amateur in the Open.
Lamprecht finished fifth in a Korn Ferry Tour event in July this year and has looked comfortable in PGA Tour company since. He was 23rd in the Bermuda Championship a month ago, closing with rounds of 67, 66 and 69. The 23-year-old fell in love with Bermuda and can do likewise with another tropical island this week.
Other selections
Kieran Vincent 45-1
Martin Vorster 225-1
Herman Loubser 400-1
Zimbabwean Kieran Vincent, like the South African contingent this week, is comfortable in the conditions in Mauritius. Vincent played on the LIV circuit this year, so will tee off at Mont Choisy free from any financial pressure. As part of the Legion XIII side, with Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton as teammates, Vincent was able to quickly bank a fortune as a LIV player. He has lost his status, so must find other avenues to profit going forward, but as a winner on both the Asian Tour and the Sunshine Tour, he is well placed for gainful employment.
Vincent made his Sunshine Tour breakthrough in May with a four-shot triumph. He has played well on the Asian Tour this year, finishing fourth in the Indonesian Masters last month, then ninth in a high-class Saudi International the week before last. He can boast Asian Tour form figures of 4-18-9-9 from his last four starts on that circuit. A power-packed player who loves wielding driver, Mont Choisy appears an ideal layout for Vincent to make an impact.
Complete a five-pronged attack with two big-price outsiders. Martin Vorster is a highly promising youngster, who was on a triumphant South African side with Jarvis and Lamprecht in the 2019 Junior World Cup. Vorster, formerly the highest-ranked amateur in South Africa, made his Mauritius Open debut at Mont Choisy in 2022 when 1,255th in the world. A share of 58th place was a decent effort given his lack of experience. Vorster's pro career seems like it may be about to take off. He has posted four top-tens in his last eight events and looks ready to win on the Sunshine Tour. Maybe he can threaten a life-changing DPWT title at the age of 22 on Sunday.
At even juicier odds, Herman Loubser is also worth backing each-way. He won the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School in fine style in 2017. It took him a while to settle as a pro, but he made his Sunshine Tour breakthrough in May, 2022. The last two-and-a-half months have hinted that a second title may be coming soon. Sunshine Tour form figures of 30-12-8-26-27-27-28 highlight how well the 25-year-old has been hitting his ball. Only two players outscored Loubser in round two of the Alfred Dunhill. That bogey-free Friday 66 at Leopard Creek should have provided a significant injection of confidence.

- Course overview The inaugural Mauritius Open was staged in 2015 at Heritage GC, before Four Seasons took over in 2016. The two tracks shared the event until Mont Choisy hosted in 2022 (2023 season). This is a relatively short resort layout with five par-fives. It was designed by South African Peter Matkovich, who was also responsible for Heritage GC, venue in 2015, 2017 (2018 season), 2019 (2020) and 2023 (2024). Mont Choisy opened in October, 2017. The palm-fringed fairways are routed around several small lakes. The fairways are generous but the rough is penal. The third and the 13th are driveable par-fours in the right weather while the par-three 15th has an island green
- Story of last year Louis Oosthuizen triumphed by two shots at Heritage GC, securing back-to-back DP World Tour triumphs
- Weather forecast Sunny and warm, with light to moderate breezes
- Type of player suited to the challenge The course looks easier on the scorecard than in reality, with winds nearly always a feature of Mont Choisy and the rough not be messed with. Powerful players with an ability to handle a breeze should flourish, with five par-fives and two driveable par-fours the key scoring areas of the layout
